Winter tyres and snow chains: what you need to know

Every winter, regulations require you to be equipped for driving in mountainous areas. Winter tyres, snow chains or snow socks: find out about the legal requirements and discover tips for driving safely on snow-covered roads.

Update of the regulations by municipal decree dated 5 February 2026. Depending on weather conditions, snow chains may become mandatory to access the resorts. Snow socks will not be accepted. In addition, failure to comply with the decree may result in a fine. See the municipal decree

Are snow chains always required?

✅ Yes, you must have snow chains. There are two rules to bear in mind in winter.

  1. From 1st November to 31st March, you are required to have winter tyres, or carry snow chains or snow socks in order to drive anywhere in the Savoy department.
  2. The authorities may make snow chains compulsory at any time, particularly in the event of heavy snowfall or for access to resorts.

👉 Conclusion: even with winter tyres, you will be refused access to certain roads if chains become compulsory and you do not have them.

Rental vehicles do not always have winter tyres or snow chains, so it's a good idea to check before you leave.

Only 3PMSF tyres meet the required standards as equivalent to removable anti-slip equipment (snow chains or snow socks). Other types of snow tyre can still be bought and used, but you must have removable anti-slip equipment as well.
